This is amazing – love the layout and choices here. Fonda being in the top 10 is a good call
Thanks Harry! I wanted to do a sort of ranking of each actor’s performances without doing a full page, and thought a top 3 would bring a bit more context to their rankings. Fonda’s got a strong group of performances at the top there, it’s very impressive that You Only Live Once and Young Mr Lincoln don’t even make his top 5.
Hmmm. What about those from the UK? I mean over the generations there have been pure legends that aren’t mentioned here. Really we could do another 50 from the UK alone. So I thought I’d give a shout out to a few younger contemporary actors that also deserve attention Barry Keoghan, Andrew Scott, Eddie Redmayne Martin Freeman Kenneth Branagh Tom Hiddleston Ben Wishaw.
UK and Ireland I mean
All of them are great actors, but most are still building their careers and don’t yet have resumes to stand up against actors with decades of great performances behind them. I’ve been a fan of Andrew Scott ever since Sherlock, and I adored his performance in Ripley this year. It’s also been fun tracing the rise of Barry Keoghan, so it will be interesting to see where his career goes from here. Those two in particular could be strong contenders for the list one day.
If I were to expand this to 100 (which I definitely plan to in the future), then the British actors who have a shot would be more along the lines of Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, Anthony Hopkins, Ewan McGregor, Peter O’Toole, Michael Caine, Malcolm McDowell, Michael Gambon, John Hurt, Jonathan Pryce, Jeremy Irons – just to name a few.
The fact that Laurence Olivier isn’t even on the list is a crime of unprecedented proportions.
